The Standard for How American Businesses Manage People

The National Commission for Human Resource Management Accreditation (NCHRMA) is an independent nonprofit organization founded on a single conviction: that the way a business manages its people is inseparable from its long-term success.

We evaluate and accredit businesses across industries that have demonstrated a genuine, measurable commitment to human resource management best practices — from hiring and compensation to employee development, wellbeing, and workplace culture.

NCHRMA accreditation is a signal to employees, partners, and the public that an organization treats its people as valuable assets to be cultivated, not just liabilities to be risk-managed.

  • Integrity & Independence
Our evaluations are conducted by independent commissioners with no commercial interest in the outcome. Accreditation is earned, never purchased.
  • Evidence-Based Standards
Our accreditation framework is grounded in current research, legal compliance requirements, and proven organizational behavior principles.
  • Continuous Improvement
Accreditation is not a one-time designation. We require ongoing self-assessment and periodic renewal to maintain certification.
  • People-First Philosophy
We believe that sustainable business success is built on the safety, health, and wellbeing of every person in an organization.

The Six Core Domains of HRM Excellence

NCHRMA's accreditation framework is built around six core domains of human resource management. Together, these domains represent the full spectrum of what it means to manage people with integrity, competence, and care. Businesses seeking accreditation are evaluated across all six.

Domain 01
Recruitment & Selection
Fair, consistent, and legally compliant hiring practices that attract qualified candidates and reduce bias throughout the selection process.
Domain 02
Compensation & Benefits
Total Rewards, equitable pay structures, competitive benefits offerings, and transparent compensation policies that reflect the value of every employee.
Domain 03
Training & Development
Structured programs that build employee skills, support career growth, and align workforce capabilities with organizational goals.
Domain 04
Performance Management
Clear performance expectations, regular feedback mechanisms, and evaluation processes that are objective, constructive, and legally defensible.
Domain 05
Employee Relations & Wellbeing
A workplace culture grounded in dignity and respect, with effective grievance procedures, conflict resolution, and employee engagement practices.
Domain 06
Compliance & Risk Management
Up-to-date adherence to employment law, proactive risk mitigation strategies, and documented policies that protect both employees and the organization.

Built on Expert Consultation

NCHRMA's standards are developed through regular consultation with leading voices across the regulatory, legal, insurance, and labor sectors to ensure our framework reflects current law, emerging risk, and real-world best practices. These ongoing partnerships keep NCHRMA standards authoritative, relevant, and credible.

Federal Regulatory Agencies
We consult with federal agencies including the EEOC, DOL, and OSHA to ensure our standards align with current regulatory requirements and enforcement priorities.
EPLI Insurance Companies
Employment Practices Liability Insurance providers offer a uniquely data-driven view of workplace risk. Their claims insights inform our standards around the practices most likely to expose organizations to liability.
Employment & Labor Law Firms
Practicing employment and labor attorneys provide guidance on evolving case law, statutory interpretation, and the legal defensibility of HRM policies — ensuring our standards hold up in the real world.
Professional Organizations & Labor Unions
Professional associations (HRM and others) and labor unions represent the perspectives of practitioners and workers alike — ensuring our standards reflect the human realities of the workplace, not just institutional interests.

How NCHRMA Accreditation Works

Our rigorous, multi-stage accreditation process evaluates businesses across our six core HRM domains. Here is how the process unfolds.

01
Initial Application
Organizations submit an application detailing their HRM structure, policies, staffing, and organizational profile. Our team reviews eligibility and assigns a primary evaluator.
2–3 Weeks
02
Self-Assessment
Applicants complete a comprehensive self-assessment across all six HRM domains using NCHRMA's standardized framework and submit supporting documentation.
4–6 Weeks
03
External Review
A contracted, certified, independent evaluation team examines the submitted materials, conducts staff interviews, and performs an on-site or virtual audit of HRM operations and culture.
6–8 Weeks
04
Commission Decision
NCHRMA reviews the findings and renders an accreditation decision. Organizations may receive full accreditation, conditional accreditation, or a remediation plan.
2–3 Weeks
